Die in der Laura Mars Gallery gezeigten fotografischen Arbeiten von Luise Marchand und Stefanie Seufert bewegen sich mit ihren individuellen Entstehungsweisen in unterschiedlichen Kontexten. Sie überschneiden sich in der Reflexion über Schönheit, Pracht und Dekadenz.

Luise Marchands dreiteilige Installation aus dem Werkzyklus Muttererde (2022/23) verweist auf die vielfältige zeitgenössische Bedeutung der Floristik unter dem Einfluss kapitalistischer Wertschöpfung, die stets den Mutterboden, den fruchtbarsten Horizont natürlicher Ressourcen, bevorzugt. Sie seziert in ihren Arbeiten die Unterwerfung der Natur und legt gleichzeitig ihre Unbeherrschbarkeit damit offen. In der Tradition künstlerischer Vanitas-Stillleben stehend und gleichzeitig mit dem Bildvokabular der Werbeindustrie spielend, ruft Muttererde frühe ästhetische Fragestellungen hervor und provoziert eine Reflexion über das Leben, über Konsum und den Umgang mit dem Organismus.

Die Arbeiten von Stefanie Seufert sind Teil ihrer neuesten Serie Spirals (2022), deren minimalistische Form Produkt repetitiver, gestischer Lichtzeichnungen mit der Taschenlampe sind. Abgelaufenes Fotopapier bestimmt die Farbigkeit der Hintergrundflächen. Als dynamische Bewegung wird jede Figur in vierfacher Wiederholung aufgetragen. So entstehen im Stockdunkeln des Fotolabors spiralige Gebilde, die an kapriziöse Formen lockiger Barockperücken erinnern. Mit ihren Fotogrammen lotet Seufert die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen analoger Fotografie aus, erweitert das Medium mit Elementen von Malerei und Performance und befragt es nach dem Verhältnis von Präzision einerseits und Spontanität, Manipulation und künstlerischer Freiheit andererseits.

Due to their individual artistic methods, Luise Marchand and Stefanie Seufert navigate different contexts in their respective photographic works shown at the Laura Mars Gallery. However, a common thread of the exhibition lies in the contemplation of beauty, splendor, and decadence.

Luise Marchand's three-part installation from her cycle of works titled Muttererde (2022/23) refers to the multifaceted contemporary significance of the florist industry under the influence of capitalist value creation – an industry always hungry for topsoil, the most fertile horizon among natural resources. Marchand‘s pieces dissect the subjugation of nature; at the same time they expose the fact that nature is uncontrollable. Standing in the artistic tradition of vanitas still lifes while playfully utilizing the visual vocabulary of the advertising industry, Muttererde evokes questions from the dawn of aesthetics and provokes reflections about life, consumption, and about how we treat our organism.

Stefanie Seufert's pieces are part of her latest series Spirals (2023) – repetitive, gestural light drawings made with a handheld flashlight, a technique that yields a minimalist style. Expired photo paper determines the hue of the background. In a dynamic process, each figure is applied four times over. Thus, spiral formations reminiscent of the capricious shapes of curly baroque wigs come into being in the pitch darkness of the photo lab. Through her photograms, Seufert explores the possibilities and limits of analog photography and expands the medium with elements of painting and performance – while questioning it about the relationship between precision and spontaneity, manipulation, and artistic freedom.
